The First Evolutionary Boot Camp

Don't start reading...
…unless you have first read “Evolutionary Boot Camps“, otherwise what you’ll read below will look meaningless to you.

Full Metal Jacket

Now we have a place and a date! I look forward to sharing this great adventure together (yeah, I’ll look exactly like in the picture).

When?

April 11-17, 2016

Attendees will arrive the day before (April 10th) and will leave the day after (April 18th). This leaves a complete 7 days boot camp.

Where?

Bali! Near the amazing Bali Barat national park, in a natural and protected part of the island.

The event will take place in a gorgeous mini village offered to us by dear friends who want to support our journey.

Your next steps

diy_books_400x465Reminder: this boot camp works as a DIY. This means I don’t organize it myself, YOU organize it with the rest of the team. My friends offered a place, I will provide the content and offer all my experience, you do the rest. This will contribute to building the group coherence and check everyone’s autonomy. You shouldn’t see it as a ‘yet another personal development’ workshop.

So…

First read and follow the steps explained in “Evolutionary Boot Camps“. It will tell you how to apply and qualify. This includes a one-to-one conversation and official agreement on my end.

Then, and only then, you can officially confirm your participation in this boot camp. Just send me an email or call me.

The boot camp will happen if we have a minimum of 12 confirmed attendees by Feb. 15, 2016. In case we haven’t reached this number, then we will cancel. So, don’t take your plane tickets before, unless you absolutely want to visit Bali no matter what 🙂

The boot camp will not accept more than 25 participants, by order of confirmation.

Enjoy the journey!

Evolve the We, Evolve the I

Please activate English subtitles

I gave this keynote conference October 24th, 2013 in Marseille for the opening of a big convention with 3000 CEOs and senior managers. Twelve minutes (actually, a little more, fourteen), to talk about our inner evolution in a world where everyone talks mostly about technology and external change.

Maybe the next humanity stands one breath away?

How I Became Useless

white_cat_sleeping_962x640

Does this title look like a failure assessment? Not at all, at least not for me. Some years ago, I made the conscious decision I would become useless.

Completely useless.

By this, I mean unusable. No one, not even myself, can use me as a tool, an instrument, a servant or a master, a groupie or a guru, an employee or a boss. Roles and functions do not apply for a useless person.

As a useless person, I have no world to save, no cause to fight for, no enemy to fight against, no moral obligations, no responsibilities, no duty.

People say we need to “earn a living”. My mom and dad told me that (and they keep telling me). My grand-parents too, a long time ago. So did my school teachers, my barber, the guy at the gas pump and the politician on TV. As far as I know, I earned my life at birth. Why should I earn it again and again? Why should I do specific actions like doing a paid job to buy for myself the right to live? Today, I have no job, no position, no title, no social status. My resumé went to the trash. It feels really really good.

Do you find all this shocking? So why do we have cats and dogs? Why do we feel so touched by kids? Don’t we unconsciously enjoy and project ourselves into their delicious untroubled uselessness?

Uselessness has also freed me from the pervasive unconscious ideologies in which we have to justify our worthiness of living. Don’t we want to make our actions fit into some coherent “reason of living” or “meaning of life”? Don’t we like to claim the serving of a “greater purpose”? Don’t we navigate on these mental oceans where we see ourselves as small parts of a greater whole? We love to see ourselves as parts of greater wholes. It doesn’t matter whether we call them God, the Kosmos, Humanity, the Divine, Mother Earth or the Nation… They all point to a big thing that has its own agenda, its own laws. We don’t have much to say there. No debates, no democracy, big dictatorship. We just have to accept, to surrender (the correct wisdom word). This apparent conflict of interest between the I and the Whole will eventually provoke pain.

As Aurobindo pointed it, the mental always sees the part in the whole, but it can hardly grasp the whole in the part. When the experience of wholeness, of existing as the entire universe, became my predominant state of consciousness, when both the part and the whole melted together, I became useless. I turned into a human and a God, an entity and an essence, an immanence and a transcendence, a one and a many, temporal and eternal, small and immense, here and everywhere. The last sparks of utilitarianism did not survive that.

As a useless person, I can now live the life of an artist, of a God creator and destroyer of worlds, for the only ecstasy of the play. I can unleash creative actions that have no utilitarian purpose, by the grace of joyful expression. By an act of blissipline, I  become my greatest masterpiece by means of scientific research, writing, music, martial arts, goofiness, sleep, making love, playing Ingress, hugging a tree or enjoying a self-indulgent, delicious indolence.

I can live in the gift economy.

I can live in radical truth.

I can become my nicest and greatest gift.

I can shine in ecstasy, like the Sun and the Moon.

Pioneering Humanity – A Conference in India

During my trip to Auroville, India, December 2014, I gave a conference about collective intelligence and my research work in exploring new ways to exist and evolve consciousness. This conference has different parts, from external objective science to empirical exploration I do at the personal level.

Keywords: #aurobindo, #auroville, #CollectiveIntelligence, #breathing, #conscisouness, #economy, #e-prime, #GiftEconomy, #food, #holomidal, #innovation, #internet, #InvisibleArchitectures, #ontology, #OpenSource, #PyramidalCollectiveIntelligence, #SocialCodes, #soul, #spirituality, #technology, #wealth, #wisdom

Collective Intelligence – a New Research Field

In this first part you will hear the great story about collective intelligence. How did it evolve through the ages, where does it go today? This part focuses on the external objective aspects of my scientific research: facts, data, words.

Evolving the We in the I

The second part of the conference offers a more complex –and deeper– understanding of collective intelligence by addressing how the collective operates in the self, how the “we” plays in the “I”. Hence the fact that we see many collectives that evolve lot’s of external aspects such as technology or governance, but people still carry, like holograms, the social dna of the old society: same social codes, same wealth technology (money), same language, same food, same relationship with the body, same beliefs (doxa), same relationship to time, etc. My research has lead me to explore and deconstruct this social dna and explore new possibilities. I share some examples in the videos below.

Language

Language carries lot’s of archaic forms of consciousness in the way it builds reality in our individual and collective psyche. Unveiling these archaic forms and deciding whether we get rid of them of evolves them helps make important evolutionary steps, individually and collectively. Here I share the example of speaking in e-prime (not using the verb “to be”).

Social Codes

No social code exist randomly. No matter how unconsciously we perpetuate social codes, they all have a function: perpetuate and maintain a given social order. Evolution means we also question the function of each social code, and decide what we want to keep, get rid of, or evolve. In this part of the conference I share how I changed a few social codes, like breathing before speaking, and the consequences it had on me and around me.

Economy

Pyramidal collective intelligence has made market economy its core economic engine. Why? Because gift economy didn’t have the capacity to reach large scales due to the exponential complexity it generates. However now holomidal collective intelligence allows the rise of gift economies at large scale, offering amazing competitive advantages compared to market economy. But it takes a quantum leap to understand and trust the process, a question that I share in this part of the conference.

Food, Technology, Body

Food carries lot’s of social beliefs and binding in it. Food and consciousness walk hand in hand. If one asks this double question: “what does good for me and for the world at the same time?”, then no conventional cuisine today offers a satisfying answer. Evolving the self means evolving the way we eat.

Technology also shapes individual and collective consciousness. We have a different world and reality before and after the invention of fire, of the writing, of the printing press, of flight, of computers, of internet. What consciousness do we cultivate in order to have technology serve us rather than the opposite?

Last but not least, the body plays a key role in invisible architectures. Culture determines in a large manner the relationship we have with or body, how we experience it, how we manifest it. Conventional lifestyle in the pyramidal collective intelligence world places the body in a social and cultural mold. How can we free ourselves and get to live fully our bodily experience? Why should we do that? What consequences?

Conclusion

If we had 3 core ideas to keep in mind, I would pick these ones:

  1. become holoptical
  2. transmute old social dna
  3. reclaim your body

Questions & Answers

People in the public asked a series of fascinating questions, as shared on the time line below.

0:00 – What about languages that don’t use the verb “to be”?

2:10 – In the gift economy, don’t people usually give back to you rather than giving back to someone else?

5:15 – Can we consider an intermediary stage between market economy and gift economy that we could call social entrepreneurship?

9:30 – Question from a sports coach: “I follow my heart by teaching what I love and do the best, however it keeps me binded to  a city, a place where I don’t want to live. If I follow and listen to my heart, how should I deal with this?”

15:10 – How does friendship play in linking the I and the We? What role of social environment in this transformation?

20:00 – Do you know good examples of holomidal collective intelligence?

24:40 – Auroville began with very innovative ideas about education. Unexperienced people applied them, and later more and more of the pyramidal world came in, with money, taxes, etc. So, what do you think about education?

29:10 – 2 questions:
1. What sense do you have about our organization in Auroville ? Does it contribute to holomidal collective intelligence?
2. When you work with companies, what agreements do you propose for groups to change in a soft way?

35:20 – You have yourself evolved towards live (raw) food, but before enough people make such a conscious step, they will end up depleting our current natural resources. What do you think about that?

37:15 – You’ve spoken about collective intelligence and shared about things you do at the personal level. How do you do the two things combined together, the personal and the collective?

A big thank you to Bruno and Damien for capturing this conference, and to Joel for the sound engineering.

The Lunar Man

La Sainte Folie du CoupleIn her many books, the French writer Paule Salomon reminds us that thriving love can begin only after the inner couple has accomplished its marriage, once our masculine and feminine, our Shiva and Shakti, our Yang and Yin live, vibrate and celebrate fully in our psyche. Freed from the drives of need and compensation, the accomplished self becomes androgynous. He-she opens himself-herself to joyful celebration with other beings like him-her, nourished by the inner union. Two beings don’t meet anymore, but four, instilling in their amorous dance all the freedom they want.

Paul Salmon speaks about solar women and lunar men. I admire the richness of the ontology about love she has, coming from years of research. This ontology inspires my own work in collective intelligence where the question of the masculine and feminine holds a central place. Paule Salomon’s narrative also speaks to my own journey. I find myself in her words. Having your story spoken by another person than you doesn’t happen everyday 🙂

Here I would like to share a very beautiful passage of her book “La Sainte Folie du Couple” (the Holy Craziness of Couple). Paule Salomon details her vision of the lunar man better than what I could have written myself. It made me realize that one has to become either a solar woman or lunar man in order to experience love as I describe it in my series of articles “Sex, Sex, Sex“.

Viviane José Restieau - ADN a
Viviane-José Restieau – ADN a

Lunar men, in the sense of reconciliation of the two poles, are in an evolutionary level where the psychic mind has supplanted the biological body. At the inner level, an important phenomenon happens, the one of self-presencing through the contact with the inner woman. Love isn’t that much external anymore, but internal, which doesn’t exclude, on the very contrary, the external woman. Lunar men are very appealing, as they have an idealistic side as well as a great flexibility. No doctrinal rigidity, a cheerfulness and a sweetness coming from inside that makes them very attentive to the moment. They are very present in love, very “cellular”, like the solar woman. Their body is vibrant and they like to arouse the body of the other. They are wonderful lovers, independently of the size of their sex, their age and their vitality. They establish a skin to skin communication, a psychological contact, they seek a soul communion. They like to receive caresses and surrender, to slip into a feminine passivity, solicit the active side of the woman during love. The harmony between the two masculine and feminine principles allows them to meet an inner fullness that makes them experience love in a different manner. Feelings like possessiveness and jealousy draw away, as well as feelings of rivalry, of affirmation by domination. Needs evolve, pleasure levels too. The behavioral harmony doesn’t obey to a moral demand, but to an inner need, to a taste. It is a matter of cooperating with the other just like we cooperate with our self, with the same friendship and the same pleasure.

The poet appears, the one who makes words dance, the one who becomes inflamed by a glimpse of a smile, a curve of a hip, a prominent breasts, the one who grows flowers, the one who whistles when he sees a woman passing by, the one who eats colors, the one who draws perfumes, the one who dresses women’s bodies with the impalpable, the one who doesn’t know what to invent next to love again and again this inescapable femininity from Earth, from life, the woman and her soul.

But where is this terrifying warrior from patriarchy, the one who wants victory from all wars he creates in a repeated hurry as he fears inaction and his secret desire for contemplation? He stands still there, but his sword now serves the poet. He doesn’t dominate anymore. He has surrendered to other values than his own, he willingly comes into rest, the rest of the warrior. He keeps the fearlessness of the knight to invest himself in action.

The lunar man is free, on the path to liberty. He can deeply and intentionally commit into a relationship as well as he can step away from any commitment. However he has a part of him that remains implacably and consciously alone, wild, for ever rebel to any structure. He holds a happy and fertile solitude that allows him to contact his anima. Rabindranath Tagore describes this encountering in his last poems:

Inner Marriage Sun MoonOne day in spring, a woman came
In my lonely woods,
In the lovely form of the Beloved.
Came, to give to my songs, melodies,
To give to my dreams, sweetness.
Suddenly a wild wave
Broke over my heart’s shores
And drowned all language.
To my lips no name came,
She stood beneath the tree, turned,
Glanced at my face, made sad with pain,
And with quick steps, came and sat by me.
Taking my hands in hers, she said:
‘You do not know me, nor I you-
I wonder how this could be?’
I said:
‘We two shall build, a bridge for ever
Between two beings, each to the other unknown,
This eager wonder is at the heart of things.

This powerful awe seats at the very heart of things. The more the anima manifests itself in the shape of an image, a feeling, a music, the more the self is invited to live its inner rapture, the more it can land in the immediacy of the present and stop running after a never ending conquest. The lunar man has succeeded in joining sex, heart and sometimes spirit. This junction, even partial, allows him to thrive in love and kindness, with no deference. We feel well in his company, we feel a warmth, a wellness that can increase in the intensity of the exchange.

Evolutionary Boot Camps

Evolutionary Boot Camps offer a training space for humanonauts who want to pioneer the next humanity. This project has grown inside me for the past 3-4 years. Now time has come…

NOTE: the first Evolutionary Boot Camp will take place in Bali, April 11-17 2016. Details here.

A little bit of context

Our species evolves, so does the way society organizes itself. And so does collective intelligence. We transition from thousands of years of pyramidal collective intelligence (top-down, centralized, market and money based…) towards holomidal collective intelligence (distributed, local and global, based on mutualist economy…). More and more people pioneer new ways to exist individually and collectively, from energy to education, from science to healthcare, from ecology to food (as expressed in trailer The New Republics).

Levels of consciousnessOn that same evolutionary wave, many people take the journey of personal growth. Sociology offers a precise scrutiny of this evolution, for instance through the rise of cultural creatives (Ray & Anderson). Maps of stages of consciousness (Wilber, Aurobindo, Gebser, Graves) show also a clear rise of consciousness on the planet, leading to more and more people wanting to interconnect and build societies and organizations that reflect their being and their values. We can also see a shift from rational societies to transrational societies (they include rationality, but transcend it to go beyond its limitations).

Individual evolution doesn’t provide many clues on how to build an enlightened society. Many people have pioneered a specific sector in the doing side, like permaculture, ecology, sustainable economies, renewable energy, software, schools, etc. But how do we put the pieces together? How do we design thriving societies from that? How do we activate individual evolution in making evolved collectives?

In my trips around the world, I see the same pattern reproducing again and again: evolved people keep reproducing the same old society together, and they suffer from it. It operates like if some hidden old social DNA kept the old society alive, with its limitations, regardless the work on personal growth and the breakthroughs in external technologies. Something seems to operate independently.

After years of research, I came to realize that the “we” that operates through the individual hasn’t evolved very much. Spiritual traditions have focused on liberating the “I” –the self– as a primary condition for liberating the We. Yet they haven’t addressed that part of the “we” –society– that perpetuates itself through the I, now time has come to take the challenge.

For instance, by writing this page in English, I use a collective tool: language. All languages contain multiple layers of archaic forms of consciousness by the very way they describe reality. They perpetuate the use of old maps and archaic, if not violent, forms of consciousness. Evolving language certainly evolves the we.

Another example: conventional money. This very old technology supports pyramidal collective intelligence very well. Because money concentrates itself in the hands of a few, it serves societies that need to rely on competition, market based economies, centralized power, i.e. pyramidal collective intelligence. It doesn’t serve holomidal collective intelligence, based on distributed networks and mutualist economy. Shifting to such an economy requires we build a technology better than money. A technology that makes us see integral wealth, a language of flows. It will evolve the We and its consciousness in a magnitude that no one can imagine today.

One last example (among so many others): social codes. Social codes never exist randomly. They have a purpose. They keep the societal structure alive and protect it. For instance standard conversations don’t leave space for silence, deep breath, meditation. We “take the floor”, we want people to listen to what we have to say, or push. Because of their speed, conventional conversations make us operate on automatic pilot. They protect our integrity and they mostly operate from the mental. Wisdom driven conversations and transrational based conversations, require a whole other set of social codes to support them. The 6 agreements that include a deep breath before speaking, for instance, offer an architecture that support the emergence of wisdom in conversations.

For years I have given 3 days seminars on collective intelligence. They offered an initiation based on an integral approach involving body, mind and spirit. I have trained hundreds of persons to evolve their body, their language, the way they use technology or see the world. It has contributed to spreading and growing awareness and knowledge about this new discipline. Although I kept saying and writing that one shouldn’t attend these seminars for personal development, most people kept coming for this motive. Many of them faced a “transition crisis” and wanted to invent a new life for themselves, clean the bad old contracts they had with the conventional world, and embody another world via their own choices and lifestyle.

Noble motives, but not sufficient.

Pioneering the next society and the next consciousness requires much more than a personal therapeutic shift. It requires the spirit of an fierce explorer giving 100% of his/her energy and attention. To make a long story short, although collective intelligence seminars served lot’s of people, they didn’t contribute to train the fierce pioneers that the world to come needs.

So, late 2011, I stopped giving seminars. I realized I had to invent a better and more powerful architecture for these spaces, evolve my communication, and become super selective. This question really helped me: what kind of design does it take to train ourselves as humanonauts of the next evolutionary leap?

Just think of an astronaut who prepares himself/herself to travel to a new planet or galaxy, and you get the real picture.

From Astronaut to Humanonaut

Imagine you dream to travel into space to discover and inhabit new universes. Because of their own physics and topology, these virgin worlds offer many possibilities to reinvent life. New civilizations can grow there from a clean start. You feel an irresistible attraction for the journey. You want to become an astronaut who will pioneer these worlds.

"Sometimes George thinks he is an astronaut"Could you do that on your spare time? Would reading books on personal development do the job? Of course not. You know that becoming an astronaut will ask for every single piece of your will, your courage, your attention, your energy and your time. You will have to leave everything in order to commit to the journey. If you have a family, then you will need to make an agreement with them so they support you unconditionally.

Before getting into the spacecraft, you will follow a long and extensive preparation –physical, mental, psychological and, in many regards, spiritual. You will learn how to make the right decisions in unknown and sometimes risky environments, you will prepare yourself to face every possible scenario and provide appropriate responses, you will master zillions of techniques and technologies. You will train yourself to keep cool in situations that would drive anyone crazy or frozen by fear. Although this training and journey may terrify many people, you love it because it makes you thrive. You made your dharma of it.

Becoming a humanonaut that explores and embodies the next humanity requires the very same intensity of training and commitment as an astronaut.

Boot Camps for Humanonauts

So, what will we do in evolutionary boot camps? I guess you have the concept now: train and play. These boot camps will give you an overview of the journey you can take to prepare yourself for the next humanity. No one in these boot camps will tell you what you should do in the future and the kind of person you should become. You will train with other fellows so you can build great capacities to invent the future.

What?

  • We will learn the fundamentals of collective intelligence and the language for social engineering.
  • We will contemplate the arrow of evolution that manifests via our individual and collective consciousness.
  • We will envision possible worlds that want to come into existence.
  • We will intensively train our bodies for some hours everyday so that everything we learn or unlearn becomes fully embodied.
  • We will explore new technologies and see how we can hack them or design them in order to provide the right infrastructure for the world we want.
  • We will explore how the old social DNA perpetuates itself through language, food, social codes, technology, time, culture, the body, the doxa.
  • We will practice new architectures for new social DNA through language, food, social codes, etc.
  • We will see how we create architectures that support higher forms of consciousness, individually and collectively.

Evolutionary boot camps will last for 7 full days. It doesn’t include arrival and departure, they must happen the days before and the day after the event.

Can we learn all these things in just 7 days? Of course not. Didn’t I write that becoming a humanonaut requires a 24/7 involvement? However these 7 days will give you enough tools and context to decide whether you want to embark on the full time journey for yourself. Not for me or any specific organization. For yourself.

What will come next? I have no idea. You will decide. Everyone will decide. Maybe a movement will emerge. Or a global boot camp. Or nothing. I have no agenda, I invite you to trust the process, as I do.

The week will have 2 parts:

  1. Days 1-4: intensive training, as described above.
  2. Days 5-7: we continue the training and the group has open spaces to reflect on the “what next?”, for you, for others.

Who?

Attending an evolutionary boot camp means you match and agree with every criteria listed below:

  • You fill in this form to explain why you want to attend.
  • You have a super physical condition. I mean super. Not as an international athlete, but you should consider running 10km, doing 20 push ups or jumping from 2m high a natural thing. You may have a good level in some sports (martial arts, swimming, rock climbing, marathon, dance, anything…). Intensive training hours don’t scare you.
  • You don’t smoke, drink, or do drugs.
  • You consider yourself as a free person and a free spirit.
  • You have developed artistic skills — music, drawing, writing, filming, circus… anything.
  • You have a strong rational, scientific, intuitive and curious mind.
  • You have solved your main psychological and existential issues. Boot camps will not serve as a space for therapy, healing or just personal development.
  • You experience a deep spiritual journey grounded by a spiritual practice (yoga, meditation, martial arts, shamanism…).
  • You at least eat vegetarian, if not vegan.
  • You agree that during this week you will eat raw organic vegan food.
  • You have a skillful practice of the Internet, such as social media, coding, design, architecture…
  • You have a free life as well as a free spirit. You haven’t entangled yourself in heavy duty life style such as a family life, heavy work position, a house to pay for the next 20 years, etc.
  • Breaking old social codes also includes exploring other possibilities with the body, such as nakedness. You feel okay with it.
  • If people tell you that Boot Camps hide a secret sect under the control of a guru, and you fear this for real, please don’t register. It means you haven’t built enough autonomy to trust your own judgment and to experience that freedom depends exclusively on you.
  • You speak fluent English — I mean fluent, not school level.
  • You agree that I will coach you during this whole week and you trust my leadership on this. At least for a week.
  • If I see you as a possible candidate for the boot camp, you agree we have a one-to-one interview so I can sense your deep motivation and you can ask all the questions you want.

How?

I will not organize evolutionary boot camps myself. You will organize them, from finding the place to calculating the costs, to dealing with logistics (accommodation, food, cooking, travel…), to distributing everyone’s role and setting up the support system. It demonstrates your capacity to make things happen. It also makes clear that we don’t make yet another class for personal development or spiritual tourism. Boot camps belong to the DIY philosophy.

We begin with an interview together. We will get to know each other. I will ask about your motivation, leadership and the role you want to take in setting up the event. You can ask all the questions you want.

These boot camps will work with groups of 12-30 people.

Where?

Tiny EarthBoot camps can take place anywhere on the planet. From Patagonia, to Central Manhattan, to the heart of India, to Hogwarts.

Boot camps should take place in spaces that embody the values we hold: ecological, beautiful, spiritually grounded.

The place should have the capacity to host daytime activities for everyone — from indoor/outdoor physical play (depends on the climate), to computer work, to meals, to meditation circles. If the place can’t host everyone during the night, then the close neighborhood should offer complementary facilities.

The place should have a very good internet connection.

How much?

Boot camps rely on the gift economy. It means:

  • I offer you my work, my experience and my time. I only ask the group to support my travel expense + food + accommodation.
  • In the end you can make a conscious gift. Not as a debt or duty, but from gratitude if you experience it. A gift to me, or to anyone else in the world. The philosophy consists in keeping the chain of kindness alive.
  • On top of your travel expense, you will likely have to invest some conventional money for accommodation and food, unless someone also offered these things to the boot camp.

Imagination and inner autonomy always help find practical solutions. For instance you may organize a conference for me that pays for the trip. Or your aunt has a chateau she wants you and your circle to enjoy. Or your best friend has extra air miles to spare. Just allow the flow to happen, and it will happen.

How to apply?

  1. Read carefully the criteria above and ask yourself whether they apply to you
  2. Fill in the registration form
  3. Have an interview with me if I select you as a potential candidate

If I don’t select you, don’t take it personally. It doesn’t say anything about your richness and potential as a human being. It just means you don’t match with the specific criteria for this specific boot camp. Maybe next time. Don’t give up if you really want it.

See you soon maybe!

Integral Play in Auroville

Starting Monday January the 5th and ending Wednesday Jan 21st 2015, I will serve two forms of specific and purposeful spaces: body plays and spaces for truth.

Body Plays

Supramental plasticity will enable it [body] to stand the attack of every hostile force which strives to pierce it: it will present no dull resistance to the attack but will be, on the contrary, so pliant as to nullify the force by giving way to it to pass off. — The Mother.

The body plays invite us to a liberating and joyful exploration of the body, of its conditioning and its potential. We use martial arts and the way of the warrior to contemplate and play with forces that animate us, pass through us, and sometimes destroy us.

Judo weight against opponentThe body plays aim to liberate our plasticity by exploring many situations involving aggressive and non aggressive forces that challenge the body, the mind and the spirit. Building a full-time, context independent, body equanimity, even in the midst of stressful situations, helps the descent of wisdom in the most cellular levels of the self.

Martial arts offer a perfect ground for self-exploration in a non-judgmental and playful way. The many exercises we do with partners help us understand ourselves, meet our edges and make the next step.

Come with sportswear or casual outfit, as we will play on the ground! No prerequisite level required, however you need a good physical shape. Come with an open, curious, joyful, engaged mind. And don’t forget your smile!

When and where?

Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 7:30am – 9am behind the Unity Pavilion

Last body play: Wed. Jan. 21st.

Classes still happen even in case of heavy rain.

Spaces for Truth

In these spaces, I offer my years of spiritual practice to manifest truth, beyond the mental.

Maybe we will speak. Maybe we will remain silent. Maybe we will play in the body, or cry or laugh together, or dream new stories.

My commitment to truth will serve and guide the process. So will yours.

Foreplay to love

I want to begin this series of articles with preliminaries (or foreplay I may say) about love. Love, such a big and small word!

What follows comes from direct experience acquired along the years. Most societies leave young men and women completely uneducated about love. As a young man I had no clue about what love and sex really meant beyond the physical arousal and the technical play we could have with it. People can grow their consciousness through love and sex if they want to, however most of seem to remain where education brought them, i.e. ground zero, leaving them unhappy, illiterate and frustrated about this most important thing about our human experience: love.

Love as an art

Tango in Buenos AiresFirst postulate: see love as an art. I became aware of this in my 30’s after reading Erich Fromm‘s, beautiful book “The Art of Loving” (you can read a little bit of it here).

If we consider love as an art, Fromm writes, then you will find in it both a theoretical and a practical aspect, just as you will in painting, music or dance. In dance we build body balance and flexibility, and we cultivate an extraordinary physical empathy with our partners. We develop an infinite set of gestures and steps. In music we have to stretch our fingers, play our scales, learn dozen of chords, train our ear, connect the gesture with the emotion. We must learn and integrate moves, techniques, compositions. In love we learn how to develop the “sense of the individuality of the other”, as Steiner writes, in other words how we can open our empathic doors to the extreme. One needs a lot of personal development in order not to fall in the alienating and conflicting abysses of fusion. In the sexual expression of love, we have these gestures, these breathings that open us to the knowledge of our body, our energies, our mutual ecstancy. Regardless the form of art, only patient learning leads to creative freedom.

Art of the BricksLove as an art produces an even more essential aspect than the technical side described by Fromm: by essence art predicates limitless freedom and creativity. Most people experience love in a conventional way. We copy/paste the standard social models of love the same way we repeat the doctrines of religion. But art becomes putrified in the catacombs of conventionalism.  Love as an art must endlessly open new paths. It relentlessly breaks the walls of morals, religion, social order, cultural diktat. Don’t we feel amazed and don’t we laugh when we see these texts, words, paintings or movies that shocked past generations? Today they look so old-fashion and so mainstream! However, what remains in us that continues to block us, to alienate us and to make us deny the others? What shadows keep us trapped in the denial of our essence, in the refusal of our freedom, in the fear of our divinity? Art, regardless of its form, has always pushed away boundaries and established new horizons. Love as an art implies we reinvent ourselves all the time and hunt our limitations.

Love has nothing of a feeling

Thanks to experience, life has offered me a second postulate: we cannot reduce love to a feeling or an emotion. Love comes from a state of consciousness that brings us into a “state of love”. We don’t fall in love, we rise in it. When we love, reality changes. Landscapes look enchanted, the air smells good, the weather feels nice even when it rains, life turns into a dream. We feel in joy and taken by a desire of kindness with the world. The graynesses of life vanishes. Indeed loving provokes feelings and emotions that spring out as consequences of our inner state.

Let’s not confuse causes and the consequences. Our emotions, thoughts and feelings constitute the ingredients produced by the inner source of consciousness. If anger, jealousy or fear come out of your “love”… do you really love? When the gauges turn red, they indicate you have left the state of love. Maybe you want to possess the other, maybe the other possesses you, maybe you suffer a pathological need for recognition, or a fear of solitude… Don’t delude yourself: in the name of love as socially defined, you transformed yourself into a tyrant towards yourself  and towards the other(s). You don’t love, or you don’t love anymore.

I like to see authentic love as a shining sun. A sun doesn’t direct its beams towards such or such other celestial body. It simply shines. Sometimes its light illuminates other planets which in turn shine and irradiate around them. We can’t calculate love, it doesn’t direct itself towards specific things or people. Love comes from an inner state that can only feed itself from itself, in the being by the being. Love exists at the condition that it has no condition. Then it becomes love with the other, and not love of the other. In the state of love we become two luminous meeting stars shining at one another.

The language of love

Language plays a central role in the way we build our inner experiences. Language builds our reality.

Cupidon in the CitySo let’s explore these ontological questions. The ordinary language of love says “I love you”, or “I love Lea”, or “Julia loves Mike”. It addresses love like a vector with a direction pointing towards a target. Doesn’t Cupid shoot an arrow? If I love a person with directed love, it means I don’t love –or have less love for– the others. In radiant, non directed, evolved love, we love, full stop. Shouldn’t we make the verb “to love” intransitive?

Because of these limitations, ordinary language doesn’t support speaking of the universal state of love. It indulges us in romantic love, the binary, possessive form of love, that submits one person to another, that builds itself on the dialectics of dependency. Poor and powerless victims of life, we “fall” in love. Then  we “marry” and we make these unsustainable and unbearable  promises: “I commit not to change, to remain the same in order to hold on to the relational form that we impose on one another today. I love you, I marry you. No one else will appear in my life.” You know the next part of the story. Romantic love denies our capacity to love in a plural way, without calculating or dividing ourselves.

To make the landscape a little darker, the language of love comes with a complete set of statuses that sow the seeds of separation. Separation from the other, separation from oneself. Words like exclusivity, fidelity, going out with, splitting, dumping, in a couple, not in a couple… Let’s add to this some poor categories: boyfriend/girlfriend, friend, lover, concubine, partner, husband or wife, homo or hetero, gay or lesbian, monogamous or polygamous, exclusive or polyamourous… When I speak about my way to love, I see how people always try to put me in one of these boxes that describe a world of objects and categories. It rejects from our social field the full palette, the vast continuum of relational experiences that life can offer.

In short, due to its lack of subtlety and nuances, our language of love doesn’t shine very much. It doesn’t have much to do with the radiant suns I mentioned earlier. If we want to evolve, shouldn’t we reinvent the language of love? It believe this will elevate us, and so I work on it. Try it for yourself too! Invent words and expressions that speak to your deep, ultimate, reality. Give a new fresh meaning to old words. Free yourself from dusty taxonomies that create alienated love.

Towards the inner androgyny

Yin Yang Sun & MoonThe only realized couples I know come from people happy with themselves. People who have accomplished their inner marriage, the only one that works. A true love encounter doesn’t come to fill an inner deficiency. We meet to celebrate. You see me and welcome me through the splendor of my being, in my flaws and my weaknesses as well as in my strengths. I see you and welcome you in the splendor of your being, in your flaws and your weaknesses as well as in your strengths. I see you who sees me who sees you who sees me, and so on. The delightful game of infinite mirrors begins, well aligned in front of one another. A kaleidoscopic explosion happens, impredictible. Art springs out. The state of love sparkles inside myself, shining towards you.

Indeed inner happiness requires a personal journey, long for some, shorter for others. The state of love arises from inner androgyny, once we have given permission to both our masculine and feminine polarities to thrive fully inside ourselves. Our masculine and feminine have learned how to dance, how to complete, and how to love one another unconditionally. The exterior couple emerges from the inner couple.

I won’t go any further for now, as others have widely explored these horizons. I think of this French writer Paule Salomon, sadly not translated in English.

And now?

Now that I shared some preliminaries, I can start talking more directly about my experience. I will continue with the 4 lights that illuminate and guide my loving life.

I will keep using the verb to love, not in the romantic sense, but through the energy of the inner marriage that I just described, when the androgynous being unites and celebrates life with another being, nourished by the source of his/her inner radiance.

Sex, Sex, Sex

Alex Grey - the Kiss

In the ‘about me‘ page, under the short section titled “Sex, sex, sex”, I share a few words about love, women and sex. Regardless of which context, culture or country in the world, these lines have provoked many conversations. I keep seeing how people seek answers to the same eternal questions about love. I have also discerned the patterns of love that prevail in different form of collective intelligence and different forms of consciousness.

In this series of articles, I will share with you how I experience love. Since the dawn of time, people have written powerfully of love; I don’t want just to rehash their work. However I think collective intelligence as a discipline offers an innovative way to look at love. Also, as a licensed (by myself  ) explorer of life, I cannot not explore love, love liberated from its imposed dysfunctional forms from the past. So, how can I love today? What can I invent? How can I reconfigure myself in order to build harmonious, free, erotic and ecstatic relationships through the celebration of body, mind and spirit?

You may find these articles sometimes abstract or esoteric. From where you stand, you may find my words about sex and body crude or indecent. From where I stand I see sex and body as poetic instruments for the art of life. Through these words I want to offer my most naked truth.

First things first, let’s begin with some foreplay.
